[ARCHIVED] How Contracting Waste Services Benefit Our Community

trash truck

Municipalities like Upper Providence Township often choose to contract with private waste haulers for trash and recycling services. This approach allows townships to offer high-quality service while keeping costs manageable for residents. Here’s why this model is widely used:

Cost Savings and Efficiency
Private waste haulers often operate more efficiently than municipal-run services thanks to economies of scale and specialized equipment. These efficiencies can result in lower costs for taxpayers.

Expertise and Specialization
Waste management companies are experts in their field. They have the knowledge and resources to handle trash, recycling, and disposal safely and effectively—often more so than local governments could do on their own.

Simplified Service for Residents
When a township contracts with a single hauler, residents have one consistent point of contact for all trash and recycling issues. This eliminates confusion and improves customer service.

Reduced Road Wear and Traffic
With a single hauler serving the entire community, there are fewer trash trucks on the road each week. This helps reduce traffic congestion and limits wear and tear on local roads. In contrast, if every household chose its own hauler, multiple trucks could be running up and down the same streets on different days.

Room for Enhanced Services
An exclusive contract with one provider may allow for extra benefits, such as specialized recycling programs or support for community education and outreach.

Flexibility as Needs Change
Townships can renegotiate or revise contracts as community needs evolve—whether due to population growth, environmental goals, or new regulations.

Looking Ahead in Upper Providence
Upper Providence Township’s current contract with AJ Blosenski expires at the end of 2025. As we prepare to bid out a new contract, we’re exploring opportunities to keep costs down while maintaining strong service. Take our 1-min survey to share what matters most to you. Closes June 25 at 10am.
